Day 7: Key West, FL

We ate breakfast in the morning and I ate more bacon and eggs. I pretty much never eat breakfast so having eaten breakfast everyday made me feel pretty heavy. I ate more eggs this week then I would have eaten in an entire year. We get off the boat in Key West and it's really hot. I was wearing my jeans thinking it was going to be mild and I had to go back through security so I can change my clothes. We did a little shopping before we went on our walking tour.

We met up with our tour guide back on the pier next to the boat. They gave us each t-shirts. The smallest size that they had was a medium. My wife is a small girl so even the medium seemed like a dress for her. I suggested that she get a bigger size and give it to someone like her dad. She switched it for a large. We went on the walking tour and learned a little history of Key West. It's a pretty nice place and I wouldn't mind visiting there again. Our first stop was a bar called Fogarty's. We had some Dolphin which is actually a fish that is more commonly called Mahi-Mahi. On the west coast we get the real Hawaiian  Mahi-Mahi. We also had some Conch and my wife did not eat any of it. It wasn't very good. The fish tasted like regular fish sticks and the Conch tasted like crab cakes. The ketchup and tartar sauce had more flavor. The next stop on the tour was Pepper's which is a hot sauce shop in Key West. They let us sample a large variety of hot sauces which progressively got hotter and hotter. The last one was called 357. It had the equivalent spiciness of 6 habanero peppers. It was really good. Needless to say, it made my eyes tear up and my nose start running. They offered some cream cheese to help lessen the pain. My wife had already bought me a bottle of water from the vending machine so I was alright. We ended up buying a bottle of a somewhat milder avocado based sauce. The last stop on the tour was Kermit's Bakery which is famous for their Key Lime pie. We were given this dessert ball of key like pie dipped in ice cream and chocolate. There was an extra one and the tour guide asked a trivia question about the tour and the winner was to get the last treat. My wife answered correctly before anyone else and ate the extra dessert.

After the tour we walked over to see the Ernest Hemingway house. It was a pretty long walk in the heat and humidity and when we got there, we found that it costs $12 per person. We decided not to go and headed back to the ship to get lunch. We were pretty dead after walking most of the day and over all from all the activities and decided to take a nap. At dinner time, we went down to the Moonlight room for dinner as usual. Our Canadian friends never showed up. I have a feeling that our conversation about politics and the economy may have annoyed them. I didn't start the conversation so I don't really feel bad. At the end of the dinner, all the staff gets together since it was the last night of our cruise and sings and song. We had finished our food just before and were about to leave. I got up at a point that I thought was the end of the song only to find that they weren't finished. I ended up getting stuck standing for a little bit and looking like a jerk. It wasn't the first time I looked like a jerk and probably won't be the last.

We went back to our room and packed our things in anticipation of our departure tomorrow. I watched a little bit of the football game and at 11 we went over to the theater to watch the comedy show. After the show, we went to bed. Next port, Miami FL.
