Monday Basketball

For the first time it was seems like ages, we played basketball on Monday. I know that I haven't done anything even remotely close to physical activity for the last month. It felt good to be out there playing again and I didn't play as badly as I expected to play given the huge lay off. We played 3 on 4 because there were 7 of us and we didn't want anyone to have to sit out. I unfortunately was on the team with 4 players. You would think that having an extra player would help out but in fact it tends to make the whole team more lazy. With an extra man, the defense plays more of a zone style and outside shots are pretty much handed to anyone willing to take one. My team was full of guys that like to take outside shots but their percentages aren't that great. I'm not about to say that I am Reggie Miller from the arch or something but I just wished they would take the ball to the basket a little more.

I did my part to try to draw the defense into the middle by driving the lane but I would usually end up with 3 guys collapsing on me. I managed to kick the ball out for a couple of assists but that was pretty rare. Most of the time I would work to get someone a clear shot and they would brick it. I would be the only one in the paint for a rebound and I suck at rebounding. Unless I have a running start, my vertical leap is about 3 inches. We won 1 out of 4 games which was pretty bad considering that we had an extra man. We had no rebounds at all but I am proud of the defensive effort our team gave.

I felt pretty sore this morning and as I went to bed last night I knew that I would feel this way in the morning. It's a good feeling since I haven't done anything for so long. It's going to be hard to get back into a routine of regular exercise with winter weather just around the corner. There is a gym at the office and I might pay the $25 to sign up.
